January 15, 2007

Manila – Reports coming say a small oil barge – or tanker exploded while being repaired along the pasig river in Manila. Some homes were damaged by the blast as crewmen where doing maintenance.

Oil tanker explosion in Manila,
NDTV.com, India - moored in Manila as crewmen cleaned a tank on Monday, injuring at least three people, coast guard officials said.

A fire broke out but was brought under control. Most of the damage is limited to the ship and a few shanties along the River. The main manila oil depot is along the Pasig river.

Speaking to residents on the Phione a little while ago – none seemed to have heard anything about the explosion. Reports are still coming as I write this. The Pasig also runs along the edges of the Philippine President’s palace.

So far investigators say it all seems to have been a accident. Manila City government leaders have been seeking the transfer of the Oil Facility to other parts of the metropolis. Primarily citing safety reasons in their push for the move and eventual phase out of the Oil and Gasoline storage areas.
