RP: ‘NUSP:Military monitoring on campus” USA: “Military monitoring youth online”
A report online brings back memories – of when I was in campus politics… that the ISAFP or any Intelligence group is monitoring student leader groups is really not new news- we had a few even in our small university tagging along with us from time to time to watch over our activities back then in 'the Day'..
So its a common struggle to keep aware on the issues and remember that while students do have academic freedom- yes- you always do have to remember that Monitoring happens.
… The National Union of Students of the Philippines said the military is closely monitoring student leaders and student council officers as part of "Oplan Bantay Laya," ANC reported Friday … .
Meanwhile on a larger global scale- the watching of the youth takes a more higher tech form of stuff of this in the Now and Online age. Basically the monitoring of sites like friednster, myspace, and others to check on those who might be or might become the persons of interest of those men in black and green and cammy!
… New Scientist has discovered that Pentagon's National Security Agency, which specialises in eavesdropping and code-breaking, is funding research into the mass harvesting of the information that people post about themselves on social networks. …
After leaving college and becoming a reporter and working on a lot of stories I eventually met up with the people in the Military who monitored me. I was amazed at amount of information they gave me- photos – mostly of me around the town I grew up in.
Right down to my dating habits! some of the comments showed I was "harmless" but 'not someone you wanted dating your sister!' HAHAHA I got a laugh out of that because at that time I was going out with the daughter of a Military person- no wonder she moved to another school far-far-far away!
Anyway it always was fun to read that stuff shared with me- I don't know what happened to all those pics though. Perhaps the file has changed now- and is much longer. Wouldn't it be nice if those of us who know were 'monitored' could get access to all the information, photo's, and stuff…
I once did ask my spook assets though why they monitored schools and student leaders so much- for obvious reasons- the groups are often the subject of recruitment by fringe groups in society – from the left and right of the political extreme.
But- one Intel guy- told me a story that was funny- he was looking for a wife! So… since he couldn't afford to make a mistake in choosing – he monitored the local college and courted his way into the hearts of the lass he 'assigned' himself to look after.
funny thing about some of the intelligence groups monitoring things – oftentimes the bottom line is … fueled by hormones and testosterone. Other times the the reasons are far more ominous. There is need to make sure the 'watchers' are indeed watching and not engaged in more extreme forms of information extraction.
But I do agree with the NUSP school officials should take the mater seriously as should parents – 'Monitoring' of student groups is while not a new problem- and- what said on campus is more than not the reality of life when it leaves the classroom or tambayan – as oftentimes the 'college" radicals of youth – are unusually the future middle class conservatives of tomorrow.
What was it Winston Churchill said on the subject?
" Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains…. "
