Mindanao: Another day another bombing….

No causalities per early reports – except the peace – and peace of mind of residents who long used to the daily events of the southern Philippines often do not notice smaller attacks anymore.

Afterall – while the protagonists in this attack may be imported in purpose and mission – over the decades of warfare and insurgency and general violence for whatever reason people had been hoping something like this will not affect peace efforts.

But reports say Malaysian efforts will continue to work bringing all sides back to the negotiating table. The Catholic Church and government are also trying to see this come to pass as well – it is hoped some form of negotiation will continue.

Sadly there indeed those aside from the extremists who want to see the conflict continue especially the local power brokers and powers that be in the area. To people on bot sides of the conflict who have become hardliners addicted to the fight – and seeking – whatever retributions on each side. That is the hardest part of insurgencies – people who have been personally affected – those on both sides who have lost friends and loved ones and worry if peace comes they wont have a chance for whatever retribution they seek.

Sadly- this is what is not only true of Mindanao or even Philippine insurgency issues alone. the same is clearly seen in Iraq – retribution has led to thousands of deaths and roughly 100 killed a day in the conflict so far – the vast majority civilians. Can’t people just get along – does ring to mind but – it is hard thing when a conflict has literally been fought on doorsteps and fathers, mothers, sister, brothers, children and parents friends and relatives are among the victims of a conflict. Then the issues of peace talks and peace building makes conflicts a difficult thing to end.

Also add on outside forces – those seeking to profit one way or another in conflict or instability and one sees the difficult position peacemakers and negotiators have.

Postscript: the insident took place in Pagadian City – where Police defused a second bomb in time. As I wrote in my blog entry above
about family being an issue in insurgency- iut even shows just how close to home the thing is-  My mom’s cousin served for many years there as cheif of police and we have many relatives there. See how close to home these things can be?
