Typhoon Durian (Reming):200 feared dead 146 bodies recovered

The Philippine National Disaster Coordinating center in Camp Aguinaldo reports that 19 people are confirmed dead and over 100 are missing after a massive mudslide has hit a area of albay province and Legaspi City. Some reports claim as many as 200 people have been killed but blocked roads and the lack off communication as well few operational helicopters in the area are hampering rescue and recovery crews.

Most of the deaths have come as a result of landslides in Albay Province.

New reports put the figure at 40 as more bodies are recovered from a massive mudslide in Albay province. 8 villages were badly hit; Rescue teams are being rushed to the sit – communication has been disrupted in many places and these fgures are expected to rise as communcation is restored. These reports are in areas close to the philippine City of Legaspi; Areas further from the City of Legaspi are expected to be reporting in the next few hours.

The damage estimates so far are in the 2 billion peso (40 Million USD range) this is for the immediate victinity only in Albay province alone.

Many parts of Legaspi city, Daraga, Pili, and other areas in the Bicol region were badly hit during the storm which was a catagory four tropical cyclone.

The storm is still in the country and is currently east of the island of Mindoro and is expected to pick up speed after crossing the southern tip of Batangas province and quezon into Tayabas Bay across the bondoc peninsula. Most expertsare seeing it has weakened – but as soon as it hits water it is expected to grow anew in intensity.

No reports have yet come in from the other parts of Region 4, the Southern tagalog region which has beeen badly hit by the storm which so far this year has recorded winds and impact levels of double the last major storm to hit the country.
