Battle of Manila on Youtube & Google Video
Its rare to see this on the web – old 60 year old films slowly fading from view in the National archives in the USA.
The Battle of Manila films and video are often dug up at anniversary time but few people have really done any major effort to tell the story before many of its survivors fade away.
Most of the people I know who lived through this often wonder why little was told about in Hollywood or other major mediums like books in the US. But the eurocntered world of the US media and movie companies often forget that at this time this was a ‘American City” since the Philippines was a commonwealth part and parcel of the USA til 1946 that was forgotten by and large in favor of Europe at least in the public eye.

In particular perhaps there is little discussed about the entire 60 year period in popular media about the 50 odd year tenure of the USA on a country that had declared its independence and won versus spain – then only to fall into manifest destiny of new imperial Washington DC of the turn of the last century.
World War II stories are often focused on men like Mac Arthur, Nimitz, and others of the famous battles -they also dominated the limited media coverage.
But the stories of people along they way and millions of men from many countries often focus world war two coverage on Europe. Not the Millions who sacrificed thier lives in Asian threater of the war and the islands… even as Hollywood discusses flags of our fathers and the era. I wonder why little is shown about perhaps one of the roughest fights America faced in liberating what was its only colony.
