Cebu ASEAN Summit: British say don’t go to Cebu?

‘Mga Pesteng Yawa’ng British !!!’ – is the general Cebu reaction.

While the British may be trying only to do the best they can to help out in the war versus terrorism one wonders if there may be another motive behind this since the British are involved in the ASEAN at only a minor level. Hence since it runs afoul of the UK commonwealth – ASEAN and all trade groups like it run versus the already set british sun of empire

A lot of Cebuano’s I know are upset over this blanket warning issued by stiff upper lips in London – some go as far – AS to say its ‘ a British attempt to sabotage the ASEAN dialogue process’ and ‘a effort by the UK embassy to do thier part to hurt the Philippines.’

One cebuano commentator went further ‘As if the British mafia based here – who run most of the prostitution dens in many parts of the country will be hard hit by the sudden influx to cebu… so they want them all to stay in Luzon to keep them in Angeles City!’

I think the Embassy is not just trying to protect british pimps’ intterest in the country though. I mean embassy staff frequent the place so much -or so i’m told they get a 20% discount!

In this case – re: the travel warning – considering the level of security deployed the threat may be seen as possible – but then – precautions have been taken to a level of securtiy not seen since the APEC summit in Subic in the mid 1990’s.

I doubt this is more than an effort to keep their bases covering just in case. I mean a high profile event like this does encourage a lot of groups to attempt things to embarrass the host country and I’m ure the concern they have is listened to- but- they could have mentioned the level of security is so high that unless you have a ASEAN accreditation card or ID of some kind you won’t be able to get within miles of the summit site.

Which means other areas are more likely places for problems if indeed anything happens. Most likely its British activists or anti-globalizers who are the most likely threat. Considering most of those NGO’s are from the UK and based in London I wonder if there might be a warning issued versus beware brits in cebu issued!

[] ” `We advise against all travel to Cebu Province, as we believe that terrorists are in the final stages of planning attacks,” said an advisory posted on the Web site of the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The Foreign Office also warned against travel to Mindanao to the south of Cebu. ” [] UK foriegn office warning issued:
