‘Madam Speaker’ it’s Pelosi’s House:233 – 202
Watching the coverage of the swearing in of America’s first woman to be speaker of the house – Political lines of the vote show clear partisan lines – 31 more Democrats than Republican in the House of Representatives. Nothing new there really – Partisanship is normal. Voting across the aisle on something unheard for any political party in power.
But, the change that is marks is a it is the first time a woman will lead one half of the three constitutional branches of the US Government. Daughter of a Italian American family from Baltimore whose father was also a Mayor Delasandro of Maryland’s premier port.
Pelosi opened with “I accept this gavel in the sprit of partnership and not partisanship.” a good sentiment to heal magnanimously then moved on to clearly show that her house is united in severing the boss = America’s People. Pelosi stating also clearly that there is no division in the support of Congress for America’s Military.
She thankedboth her family and noted her roots; Her husband and children for allowing her to move from Kitchen to Congress.
St Francis creed is what she calls her founding principle of service – and – calling on his ideals which also serves as the City of San Francisco’s anthem –
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, the faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
She also called on President Bush to put an end to an open ended war in Iraq and on terrorism and called on Iraqi’s to take the leadership and take over the fight to restore thier own country.
Pelosi says the American people want a new America – built on the values that was built on Justice, Liberty, and Opportunity.
‘Norbus Orem Secorum’ she says must be moved onto the 21st century – a new America is needed – also reaching out to the middle class – America’s democratic base – mostly her speech can be read online at http://www.house.gov
But her words also showed to her houses other occupants that they need bi-partisanship in order to move ahead with the 110th US Congress. She promised a ‘No deficit spending’ budget – saying there is a need to make reforms in the way congress works – crack down on lobby groups.
Promisng a new congress in 100 hours of dedicated work and renewal. But also said there is need to respect each individual congress persons – saying there is a need – to make progress for ther American people with a unified house – respectful of views of the minority and also speaking for the most important voices of all in the USA the children.
It was interesting to note that a electoral protest over a district in florida delayed the swearing in of members for two points of parlimentary inquiry. Obivously, a strange moment for two younger members of congress showing that even in a house now run by a grandmother – her grandchildren by her side as she took her oath – that she still has children who seem to want to play politics even as she called for unity.
Oh well… it is congress.
